&lt;b&gt;Bonnes pratiques : Remercier ses clients...&lt;br&gt;
&lt;/b&gt;- Rapha, un fabricant anglais de vêtements pour vélo, envoie cet emailing aux
clients qui ont déjà commandé chez lui. Objectif : leur offrir les frais d'envoi sur
leur prochaine commande.&lt;br&gt;
- Le mot "THANK YOU" (merci, en anglais) est répété à la fois l'objet de l'emailing,
comme au tout début du texte. 
&lt;br&gt;
- Le texte rappelle aussi l'importance du client chez Rapha, de même que les modalités
précises pour bénéficier de cette gratuité, ainsi que la limite de l'offre. 
&lt;br&gt;
- Deux mots sont soulignés en gras : FREE SHIPPING et le code associé. 
&lt;br&gt;
- Le graphisme est soigné, et reprend vraiment l'esprit du site&lt;br&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Impact :... et leur offrir un cadeau sur leur prochaine commande&lt;br&gt;
&lt;/b&gt;Avec cet emailing, la marque Rapha souhaite fidéliser ses clients, en leur offrant
les frais de livraison. Ce cadeau est intervenu au bout de ma 3ème commande. La marque
estime qu'à partir d'un certain nombre de commande, elle se doit de faire un geste
envers ses clients.

Bonnes pratiques : Adapter un emailing en fonction de l'Actualité...&lt;/b&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
- Orange démarre la rentrée en proposant des produits à petits prix principalement
à destination des étudiants. La marque met ainsi en avant des produits high-tech branchés
ou pratique comme un ordinateur portable.&lt;br&gt;
- Des pris attractifs mis en avant par une couleur orange et par un effet "post-it"
qui rappelle toujours le thème de la rentrée. 
&lt;br&gt;
- Des produits mis en avant de manière simple et efficace, malgré des call-to-actions
discrets qui pourraient limiter la prise d'action du destinataire.&lt;br&gt;
-Une offre limitée qui incite les contacts à passer à l'action rapidement.&lt;br&gt;
&lt;b&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
Impact :... pour répondre aux attentes du destinataire.&lt;/b&gt;
&lt;br&gt;
La marque Orange a bien compris que la rentrée pouvait être une période propice aux
achats mais que ceux-ci devaient rester raisonnables... Elle a donc su proposer des
produits adaptés aux besoins des étudiants tout en restant accessible pour leur petit

&lt;p&gt;While I was exploring newsletters that I had received from Aldo over the last two weeks, I must admit my user experience was not exactly smooth sailing… As a Gmail user, images were not enabled for me by default and the text version of the email did little to convey the Aldo brand and message. Alt text was not used for the important headlines, images, offers and calls to action. Regardless of the text formats visible appearance, I decided to explore further and I turned on the images.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Immediately I noticed that I was not able to click on any of the links within the newsletter. So even if I was interested in a product, I couldn’t click and proceed to buy. When I checked the HTML I noticed that they were using image maps which do not go very well with &lt;a href="http://t.message-business.com/TrackFeeds.aspx?id=P0xpbmtJZD04MEQ3RjZFMzA0NDA2QTZEMDAmb3BlcmF0aW9uPTJFNjlBNjJDMTI5NURFQzgwMCZhY2NvdW50PTcxOEU5Rjc4NzY1MjQwMUMwMCZmb3JtYXQ9eG1sJmZyb209aXRlbSZhbGlhcz1FODQyOEI0QUMzODc0OTk3MDA="&gt;Gmail&lt;/a&gt; – Yahoo and Hotmail also block image maps.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Once I finished my analysis of the newsletters, several thoughts crossed my mind. There are quite a lot of best practices that should ideally be followed by all permission based email marketers. These are the practices which ensure that the marketer gets lots of opens, clicks and most importantly a good return on the marketing dollar.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Here are some of the best practices which came to my mind after my analysis of the Aldo newsletter:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Double check your Authentication: You should be sure that all the outbound email servers from which mails are being sent are mentioned in the sending domain’s SPF and Sender ID records.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Creative teams should be advised to stay away from image maps. They do not go well with Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail. Inability to click on images may leave the recipients dissatisfied and leads to a depleted user experience. Additionally, most ESP’s do not measure clickthrough on image maps.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Alt texts should be used for important images, calls to action, offers and headlines.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Without the images, the newsletter should not look cluttered and readers must be drawn to the offers. The best offers should be included in the body text, defined image sizes (width and height) and be supported by alt tags.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Recipients should be given an easy way to update their personal information or email preferences. Some users may end up unsubscribing because they could not find an easy way to update their personal information.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Provide an easy unsubscribe mechanism (preferably one touch), the landing page should have the affirmative option prechecked.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Sender’s postal address should be mentioned in the footer of the email. This is a legal requirement under CANSPAM for marketers sending email from or to US and once FISA comes into effect, it will also become a legal requirement for Canadian senders.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Have a link to the privacy policy in the footer of the email. This is helpful in reassuring recipients that the company is concerned about the way it collects, stores and uses personal information.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Explore the idea of using customer’s purchase behavior for dynamic rendering of emails.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;A small map to the nearest store &lt;em&gt;(request for zip code during sign up)&lt;/em&gt; could be provided below the fold. In this way, traffic is driven both to the website and to the store. May be having a map v-s having a ‘store locator’ link could be tested.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Recipients could be encouraged to take a print out of the newsletter (which has a barcode). This way specific email campaigns can be measured (both online and offline sales) for return on marketing dollars.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;p&gt;In essence, the feature (which all Gmail users will get over the next few days) allows users to split the inbox into three sections.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The default top section contains all the email Google feels is important to you. The second is the email that’s been starred for later reading, and the bottom section is for “everything else”.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Guess which section is likely to get most attention?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Indeed, according to &lt;a href="http://t.message-business.com/TrackFeeds.aspx?id=P0xpbmtJZD00RkEwNERFQjY1ODk3ODY0MDAmb3BlcmF0aW9uPTJFNjlBNjJDMTI5NURFQzgwMCZhY2NvdW50PTcxOEU5Rjc4NzY1MjQwMUMwMCZmb3JtYXQ9eG1sJmZyb209aXRlbSZhbGlhcz1FODQyOEI0QUMzODc0OTk3MDA="&gt;Mashable&lt;/a&gt;…&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;At Gmail, not every message now gets an equal chance of attention. That’s 100+ million Gmail users where the inbox is no longer a level playing field.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Back in March &lt;a href="http://t.message-business.com/TrackFeeds.aspx?id=P0xpbmtJZD00ODU5RDk2M0JBRkM2NkIyMDAmb3BlcmF0aW9uPTJFNjlBNjJDMTI5NURFQzgwMCZhY2NvdW50PTcxOEU5Rjc4NzY1MjQwMUMwMCZmb3JtYXQ9eG1sJmZyb209aXRlbSZhbGlhcz1FODQyOEI0QUMzODc0OTk3MDA="&gt;I wrote&lt;/a&gt;:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;“It seems inevitable that ‘intelligent’ inboxes will highlight ‘priority’ messages, based on the user’s previous interactions with that sender’s messages or whether the recipient has some formal connection with that sender.”&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;“…uses a variety of signals to predict which messages are important, including the people you email most…and which messages you open and reply to…”&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The intelligent inbox is here&lt;/strong&gt;. And not just at Gmail.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Yahoo, for example, &lt;a href="http://t.message-business.com/TrackFeeds.aspx?id=P0xpbmtJZD1CMUVCODI3N0FGOENEN0M4MDAmb3BlcmF0aW9uPTJFNjlBNjJDMTI5NURFQzgwMCZhY2NvdW50PTcxOEU5Rjc4NzY1MjQwMUMwMCZmb3JtYXQ9eG1sJmZyb209aXRlbSZhbGlhcz1FODQyOEI0QUMzODc0OTk3MDA="&gt;allows&lt;/a&gt; users to switch the inbox display to “view emails only from your Contacts or Connections”.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Hotmail has the &lt;a href="http://t.message-business.com/TrackFeeds.aspx?id=P0xpbmtJZD1FMUE4QkQ2QkEyNkYzMDJBMDAmb3BlcmF0aW9uPTJFNjlBNjJDMTI5NURFQzgwMCZhY2NvdW50PTcxOEU5Rjc4NzY1MjQwMUMwMCZmb3JtYXQ9eG1sJmZyb209aXRlbSZhbGlhcz1FODQyOEI0QUMzODc0OTk3MDA="&gt;“sweep” feature&lt;/a&gt; which lets recipients move all messages from a particular address to a folder or the trash at the click of a button…and tell Hotmail to &lt;strong&gt;repeat that procedure&lt;/strong&gt; for all new messages from the same source.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;These developments make a mockery of the status quo marketer’s success mantra:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;“As long as what we’ve always done is more than we can get away with, all is well”&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Intelligent inboxes mean you can get away with less and less. They are driving a welcome wedge between bad and good email marketing.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The rewards for providing valuable, wanted messages that people interact with are ever greater: better inbox positioning in a less-cluttered inbox.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The penalties for not doing so are also greater: poorer inbox positioning or never reaching the inbox in the first place.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In January, I &lt;a href="http://t.message-business.com/TrackFeeds.aspx?id=P0xpbmtJZD03NDE5RTM4RTY3NTA4Q0QxMDAmb3BlcmF0aW9uPTJFNjlBNjJDMTI5NURFQzgwMCZhY2NvdW50PTcxOEU5Rjc4NzY1MjQwMUMwMCZmb3JtYXQ9eG1sJmZyb209aXRlbSZhbGlhcz1FODQyOEI0QUMzODc0OTk3MDA="&gt;argued&lt;/a&gt; that the bar for what you can get away with is rising faster than the quality of most people’s email marketing. 2010 would be the year when many marketers would find the lines crossing:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I was wrong.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Intelligent inboxes mean the graph looks like this:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;So what needs to change to turn intelligent inboxes into a marketing win? Gmail’s priority inbox was only announced yesterday, so all the implications will take time to reveal themselves.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In general, all we need to do is all the things we’ve long-known we should be doing…better targeting and segmentation, striving to provide more value, trigger emails, etc.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Specifically…&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;1. Intelligent inboxes need intelligent messaging&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Email marketing went a long way with the shotgun approach. If some people respond to the message and the rest aren’t too bothered, then the “blast” approach survives.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This survival depends on a low penalty for being “uninteresting”. But all these inbox developments (not to mention changes to the &lt;a href="http://t.message-business.com/TrackFeeds.aspx?id=P0xpbmtJZD02RTIyMzgxNzkzMEUwNTgxMDAmb3BlcmF0aW9uPTJFNjlBNjJDMTI5NURFQzgwMCZhY2NvdW50PTcxOEU5Rjc4NzY1MjQwMUMwMCZmb3JtYXQ9eG1sJmZyb209aXRlbSZhbGlhcz1FODQyOEI0QUMzODc0OTk3MDA="&gt;deliverability landscape&lt;/a&gt;) now mean this isn’t the case: &lt;strong&gt;your position in the inbox becomes directly related to the worth of your message&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;2. Intelligent inboxes demand interaction&lt;/h2&gt;
